John Terry began his teaching career in 1965 at Sherman High School where he taught Biology until leaving to serve in the Army from 1968 until 1970.  In 1970, he began teaching Biology at Denison High School.  In 1975, he became an Adjunct Biology Professor for Grayson College, a position he still holds.

In 1989, Terry was named Teacher of the Year for Texas, by the National Association of Biology Teachers.  In 1990, he was named KLAKE Teacher of the Year, and received the Excellence in Teaching Science Award from the Texas Medical Association.  He was named Teacher of the Month by KMKT in 2012.

He is a Past President of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers, and has served on the Executive Committee of the Texas State Teachers Association.  Additionally, Terry serves on the Board of Trustees of the Texoma Regional Blood Center, and attends Waples United Methodist Church.

Each year, the Denison Education Foundation hosts the Scholars Among Us Banquet where top students are honored.  Each student is asked to name the most influential teacher they have had.  John Terry is named by multiple students each year.

Terry said; “Thanks so much for the honor of being awarded the Mirabeau B. Lamar Award winner for 2018.  I am extremely humbled by being chosen to receive such an outstanding award.  I love teaching and will continue to do my best in the years ahead.  The opportunity to share the award presentation with my family and friends was greatly appreciated.”
